HOPE

The Hospice Organization and Palliative Experts (HOPE) of Wisconsin began in 1987. They are the membership organization representing the licensed hospices in Wisconsin. HOPE is a 501(c) (3) organization.

Their mission is to provide education, legislative influence, and partnership opportunities to all individuals and organizations in the state of Wisconsin who influence quality end-of-life decisions and care to strengthen the provision of hospice and palliative care.

The following paragraph is taken from the HOPE website: www.wisconsinhospice.org : What is Hospice? Care and compassion . . . always. To think that you or someone you love is dying can be devastating. It may seem that all is hopeless, that there is nothing more you can do. However, that is not true. There is much you can do. Hospice is available to care for you or your loved one so that your remaining days are comfortable and filled with the love and support of family and friends. Hospice care:

• Emphasizes living one’s remaining days as fully as possible.
• Affirms life and neither hastens nor postpones death
• Provides relief from the physical and emotional pain that often accompanies terminal illness
• Cares for the whole person and family
• Provides grief support to the surviving family.

Together with the executive Director of HOPE of Wisconsin, we will provide Chapters with volunteer opportunity ideas for the hospice centers in their area. Currently over 65 Wisconsin cities have hospices that are partnered with HOPE so there is sure to be one within reach of all of Wisconsin’s Eastern Star Chapters. Hospice is required under law to have volunteers, and volunteer efforts are essential to their function. Chapters will be provided with a list of volunteer opportunities.

Money collected during the year by our Chapters and by our special fundraiser will be passed through to hospice centers around the state. The executive director plans to be present at our Grand Chapter session in May 2009 to let us know how many hospice centers we will be positively affected by our efforts.

One of the saying HOPE uses is “It’s how you live.” This organization does just that – it helps people live each day they’ve been given. We know that you will embrace this project and look at those utilizing the services of hospice as living each day.
