The Golden Rule.

“The rule is a measure of distance, the Golden Rule a measure of character, and, as our order has traveled a distance of fifty years it has added golden privileges of fellowship and golden treasures of love to the lives of many thousands of our sisters and brothers.”

Processional: the combined Choirs of Milwaukee County Chapters, the Grand Pages and escorts entered the dimly lighted auditorium. The male escorts formed a line across the north and south while the pages and women escorts in floor length white gowns carrying lighted candles formed the numeral “50” around the altar. Entrance of Grand Officers to the “Golden Rules March”.

The Worthy Grand Matron explained that the Gavel she was using came from the Grand Jurisdiction of North Carolina. It was made of oak, poplar and cedar wood taken from the Guilford Courthouse Battle Ground near Greensboro. The battle was fought in March 1781, and was one of the decisive battles of the Revolutionary war, with General Nathanial Greene in command. The grounds are now the National Military Park and the most beloved place in that section of the state. The pieces of wood in the gavel grew on that battlefield.

The Gavel was used by the Worthy Grand Matron of North Carolina in June 1939, and has since been used by six other Worthy Grand Matrons. It is hoped that it will be used to open a Session of every Grand Chapter in the United States and Canada, then it is to be placed in the Masonic Museum of North Carolina.

In keeping with the Golden Jubilee spirit of this Fiftieth Anniversary Session, the auditorium was adorned with rich autumn leaves and chrysanthemums in all their glorious shades of gold. The background in the east was a white silk curtain across which hung large golden letters:

“Golden Jubilee”
1890 1940

Standing guard on either side were high golden baskets of flowers banked with dark green palms. The opening ode: “God Bless America.”

This year I have stressed the importance of opening chapters on time…also…the importance of paying just tribute to the flag of our country.
