The 80th Annual Session of the Grand Chapter of Wisconsin, Order of the Eastern Star, the “Signet Session”, convened in the Dane County Coliseum, Madison, Wisconsin, on September 29, 30 and October 1, 1970. This was a different setting for Wisconsin Grand Chapter, as in the past, the Sessions were always held in the Milwaukee Auditorium. However, this did not detract from the beauty of the Session in any way. The huge Coliseum floor was transformed into a beautiful Grand Chapter floor setting. As the black curtains opened, everyone was immediately aware that this was the “Signet Session” by viewing an 18 ft. in diameter, 1,800 lb. crushed glass Signet portraying every detail that is shown on our Chapter Signet. Pine trees flanked the base of the Signet. What an inspiring sight this was as each section of the Signet was lighted during the Prologue. The Signet tells an impressive story promulgating the principles and teachings of our Order, thus we had before us throughout the Session a constant reminder of our membership and responsibilities in the beautiful Order of the Eastern Star. Orchid mum plants graced the dais and orchid ribbon and bows decorated the East stairways. A huge basket of flowers in the Worthy Grand Matron’s colors, blue, pink, and orchid, was placed in front of the podium. A large three-dimensional glittered sign was suspended in the East above the dais, revealing the 1970 theme “Lamp of Fellowship.” The Labyrinth was enclosed by a gold wrought iron fence spaced with small pine trees that were lit by small lights throughout the entire session. The traditional Wisconsin white carpeting and red runners made the Grand Chapter floor very impressive. A trellis made in the shape of a pentagon, covered with greenery and violets, formed the entrance ways in the West. Gaily colored bees were suspended from the top of the trellis, depicting the motto “Belong, Believe, and Build.”
In back of each Starpoint station was a large triangle planter of crushed glass and adding to the effectiveness of this setting, each was lighted in its respective color. The base was filled with greenery and the appropriate Starpoint flower. A gold Aladdin lamp was the focal point of each triangle decoration. In the West and at the Conductress stations, glittered stars within the pentagon were used.
